A Blackthorn Winter

by Nina Packer | posted in: Nina Packer | 2

Spring is finally here, a new tender year well on its way and the Cornish hedgerows are already thick with flowers; primroses cover the banks here still, with large patches of Dog Violets amongst, the Blackthorn is out, (late this … Continued

St. Ewe Saint of the Holy Yew/Ewin Charcoal on Fab St. Ewe
Saint of the Holy Yew/Ewin
Charcoal on Fabriano Paper

This coming weekend the ancient Feast Day of St Ewe is once again being celebrated in the Parish, culminating in a day of art & history talks at the church on Monday, including presentations on the Medieval Rood, local history and the Celtic female Saints and asking the question, ‘who was St Ewe?’

My idea of St Ewe was born from a suggestion that she could come from the Cornish word for the Yew tree, Ewin - thankyou Charlotte Marsden - so she sits in between two Yew trees in berry, a balance of light and darkness made from burnt sticks, with tiny stars scattered across her dress, a study for a hoped future painting.

She will be on display as part of an exhibition of work by members of Sketch Club, and fellow artist in residence @terryeteverson from 12-5pm, cream teas served throughout, Shanties at The Crown at 6pm, all are welcome.

A belated birthday trip to St Ives, and the chance A belated birthday trip to St Ives, and the chance to visit the ancient town church, dedicated to St Ia and thought to be built on the site of her oratory.

Legend, (and the church leaflet), tells us that St Ia was an Irish princess who sailed into St Ives bay on a leaf and preached on the Island on the site now occupied by St Nicholas Chapel, (and where Sven Berlin lived and worked before leaving in a wagon for the New Forest).

The four font angels here flash large sparkles of mica as you move past them, and have a curled beast each underneath - beauties! Other lovely things include a 1930s Alice Moore embroidery, jewel like glass, charcoal drawing and the exquisite’Mother and Child’ carved by Barbara Hepworth.

Lastly, a visit to the Associate Members show @penwithgallery where ‘Old Hushwing - Barn Owl II’, by @katrinaslacksculpture was my favourite thing.
