A few days late post for St. Catherine’s Day; ‘An Old Woman Lace Making’, Joan Eardley, c. 1948-49, Black Chalk with Pastel, 16” x 20”, Lillie Art Gallery, East Dunbartonshire Council. I love Joan Eardleys portrait drawings, and this one always makes me think of the labour involved to produce lace: hand made sitting outside or in doorways of houses in order to make use of the strong natural light for as much of the day as possible before costly candles or lamps were lit Indoors, and of a value that mechanisation has removed.
