Plein Air Painting

by Nina Packer | posted in: Nina Packer | 0

Summer has suddenly arrived in Cornwall, after what seems like the longest and darkest of Winters, and I have been enjoying packing up my painting bag and working outside.

Drawing Victorian stars from a window at St Ewe Ch Drawing Victorian stars from a window at St Ewe Church today, at the last Sketchclub of the year - lots of light and colour! And, the 100 odd year old St Ewe Camellia is in full bubblegum pink riot in the church yard…

A few days late post for St. Catherine’s Day; ‘An Old Woman Lace Making’, Joan Eardley, c. 1948-49, Black Chalk with Pastel, 16” x 20”, Lillie Art Gallery, East Dunbartonshire Council.

I love Joan Eardleys portrait drawings, and this one always makes me think of the labour involved to produce lace: hand made sitting outside or in doorways of houses in order to make use of the strong natural light for as much of the day as possible before costly candles or lamps were lit
Indoors, and of a value that mechanisation has removed.

The 25th November honours St. Catherine of Alexandria (of Catherine Wheel fame), and Katherine of Aragon, both patrons of lacemakers, (so I read in Cattern Cakes & Lace - A Calendar of Feasts).
